Today’s Card of the Day, the Seven of Wands, is all about aggression and defiance, standing your ground and asserting yourself. I absolutely adore Stephanie Pui-Mun Law’s interpretation of this card in the Shadowscapes Tarot, which shows a vixen and badger in a head on clash.
There are times in life when we need to stand up for what we believe in, these can be simple views, or they can be very dear to us, which is what I believe we see in the card above. The Vixen is not just fighting for herself, but in order to protect her kits. Her love for them burns in her heart, and the fear for their safety makes her fight with all her strength. Badgers can be very vicious animals, tough adversaries indeed. But when we have conviction and a strong character we can withstand any obstacle.
One aspect I believe to be important in this representation is the bamboo. Bamboo is a very supple plant, but it has a strength belied by its appearance. When standing your ground, in my opinion, it is best to be like the bamboo; supple enough to listen to others’ opinions, and stand down if your fight is not worthy of the struggle, but also with enough strength of character to know when you are fighting for a just cause and the inner strength to stand against the harshest of opponents.
Something I noticed today when pondering over the card, was the spiral in the centre of the image that seems to be emanating from the stand off. I see this as being representative of the reciprocal nature of both aggression and defiance. As soon as we stand our ground and take a firm position, others will inevitably do the same. When we stand up for what we believe in, simply by doing so, we are setting in motion an energy of resistance which appears in the form of those who oppose our views. This doesn’t mean that it is not worth fighting for your beliefs, just that you need to be aware that you may cause some ruffles in the energy around you as you do. As a result, it is best to think deeply as to whether the fight is worth it, if so, then stand your ground and refuse to yield, but if not, then maybe it is better if you just let it go.
